Amkhoi Wood Fossil Park is a unique geological site located in the Birbhum district, approximately 10 kilometers from Bolpur-Santiniketan. It is West Bengal’s first and only wood fossil park, showcasing remarkably preserved remnants of trees that lived millions of years ago.
Key Highlights & Science
Ancient History: The fossils at the park are estimated to be between 15 to 20 million years old, dating back to the Miocene Epoch.
The Fossils: These are not just "old wood" but "petrified wood." Over millions of years, organic wood material was replaced by minerals (mostly silica) through a process called permineralization, turning the wood into stone while keeping the original structure visible.
The Landscape: The park is spread over a vast area and features large fossilized tree trunks laid out in open-air pits, protected by sheds. Some specimens are several meters long.
The Discovery
The fossils were accidentally discovered in the early 2000s during a routine excavation by the state's Forest Department. Realizing the scientific significance of the area, the government developed it into a protected park to prevent the illegal trade of these rare geological artifacts.
Visitor Experience
Interpretation Center: The park includes a museum and an interpretation center that explains the process of petrification and the prehistoric flora and fauna of the region.
Nature Walks: The park is beautifully landscaped with pathways, greenery, and seating areas, making it a quiet and educational spot for a stroll.
Educational Hub: It is a popular destination for students, geologists, and history buffs who want to learn about the Earth's distant past.
